    I swear by the quality and value of Optimum Nutrition…have used this and their regular whey for years, excellent stuff. There’s pricier and cheaper proteins out there, but this seems to be the Honda Accord of proteins, reasonable price for excellent quality beyond which you start to hit the law of diminishing returns.Use this casein whey right before bed on nights after hard workouts, or if I have not had a full dinner and don’t want to go to bed feeling hungry…could be a placebo effect, but it always leaves me feeling more energized in the morning, and also has yielded some respectable mass and strength gains during my building periods.TIP FOR NEWBIES: be sure to mix this in either a blender or a Blender Bottle (with the metal agitator ball) rather than using a spoon and glass—casein is much harder to dissolve than normal whey. The Blender Bottle is an excellent use of what, $5 or 10 bucks.

I was always extremely sore for days after an intense workout, was getting a whey shake in after, and was eating a lot of protein, what I didn’t realize was that I was going getting sore overnight because I wasn’t eating before bed. Enter casein, this protein isn’t digested quickly so it provides more available protein over an extended period of time, meaning that while I sleep, my muscles can continue to rebuild instead of running out of available proteins to synthesize and prolonging the soreness. This has seriously cut my muscle recovery times down by at least 2 days from heavy sets. If you aren’t using casein as a part of your supplement stack and you’re sore for what seems like forever after leg day…get some.

    Great product. Taking this before and after a workout really helps with muscle fatigue, especially if you are lifting while at a caloric deficit.Warning, though: The “unflavored” isn’t really unflavored; it tastes like dirt. You NEED to mix it with something, like your pre-workout and/or post-workout drinks/shakes in order to mask the flavor. I mix it with my chocolate-flavored whey protein powder and I can’t taste it. Alternatively, you could take quick “shots” of this with a couple ounces of water, with a “chaser” like you would do with a shot of alcohol you don’t like. But just filling up a glass with water and mixing this with it and trying to drink it? Not gonna happen.

That’s why I take Whey protein (also from ON) in the morning and 2 scoops of Casein protein as a post-workout meal after my workout everyday. Casein is a slow digesting protein, thus, stays in body longer and works longer that’s why it’s often taken before bed (bed (if your goal is to build muscle and potentially gain weight) to build new muscles tissues and promote lean muscles grow. Not to mention, it also repairs broken-down muscle fibers after a workout while you sleep. So far, ON products work best for me because I can feel and see how my body changes through times. I’ve tried other bands but nothing beats this.

    …Will you ever be prepared for how bad the unflavored variety tastes..It’s like crushing a whole bunch of different pills and tasting it… The extra sugar or artificial flavorings in the flavored ones cannot be recommended enough.God. It’s one of those tastes you will never forget.Save yourself man. Take my experience and save yourself the torture.I have to finish the damn thing as punishment for making the wrong decision…I hate myself.

    For too long I had relied solely on whey protein to help build muscle, especially after intense work outs. It definitely helped, but often times I would wake up the morning after not feeling that much better. In other words, I wasn’t really recovering that well. I considered just doubling up on the whey, basically eating another serving before bed, but then I did some research.I figured it would benefit me to alternate the types of protein supplement, and when I added the Optimum Nutrition Casein protein, it was a game changer. I now wake up in the morning feeling back to 100%. Even though I never train the same muscle groups two days in a row, I feel as if I could. I am making a 100% recovery in less than half the time.As a side benefit, the stuff tastes amazing. I mix mine with soy milk (yeah, I drink soy, get over it) and shot of light cream, after reading that a modest amount of fats help the body absorb large amounts of protein. Anyways, the vanilla is a very deep and satisfying flavor. To change it up I sometimes add some cinnamon powder, or some nutmeg and ground clove. On top of that, I eat it just before bed, and I am never super hungry in the morning, and I have eliminated my midnight snack routine.I use a hand crank egg beater to mix this stuff up, because even a little bit quickly turns into a thick mixture, sort of like wet concrete. It needs way more liquid to dissolve into than whey protein powder. Sometimes I also throw in some Greek style yogurt, but this stuff is thick enough already. The labeling says something about how Casein behaves differently when it hits the acid in the stomach, and that it expands, and you see this when you mix it up.If you have been missing something in the protein department, I would absolutely try this Casein.PROS:+ Tastes awesome.+ Fills you up, you feel satisfied, and won’t be hungry for quite a while after.+ A little powder goes a long way.+ Slow absorption.CONS:- More expensive than most whey protein powders, but that’s common to Casein.
